Homeopathy & the Dancer

So let's understand what on earth homeopathy has to do with dance.

Homeopathy is available to anyone, but for the dancer I believe it is vital.

It’s fair to say that all a dancer wants to do is dance. Injury prevention and fast recovery is of the utmost importance.

Here’s a gift of information from me to you, one dancer to another.

  • Homeopathy helps maintain fitness.
  • Homeopathy accelerates injury recovery time.
  • Homeopathy teaches you about your body so that you can become more in touch and start recognising its messages.

The homeopath is always looking for connections, reasons for the imbalance. In turn you too become more in touch with your body and start recognising its messages. I remember in training, struggling with my body; why won’t it do this and that? Why always injuries on my left side? My body was just this thing that I tried to oil into a malleable tool.

The homeopath helps you to realise that which you might never consider. For example, that your bone injury is due to a weak kidney and that kidneys are associated with fear. If one is often in a fearful state then structural injuries can occur. If it were a recurring injury, I would not only consider physical strain but try to ascertain the emotional state. The body never lies: you do what you do because of what’s going on physically or emotionally.

So, how can Homeopathy benefit dancers?

When dancers come to me, a lot is left unsaid. Despondency, terror of auditions, rejection, intensity of training, chronic aches and pains – we have a mutual understanding of the pitfalls. I identify oh-so-well with dancers who feel guilty for having incurred an injury, or feel lethargic because the adrenalin rush from constantly moving is no longer there.

A good homeopath will bring this out with questioning. A dancer homeopath already appreciates the turmoil and can act more instinctively. My role as a homeopath is to read the situation: my dance experience enables me to do that with greater insight.

Self prescribing

The great thing about homeopathy is that you can self-prescribe.

Acute conditions (short term aliments such as colds, coughs, tummy upsets) and first aid conditions (e.g. bruising, shock, grazes) are self-prescribe-able. However it’s important to remember that with everything there is a deeper level of care required and that’s why you need a homeopath. The homeopath is looking after the whole of you and not just one area in isolation.

“The more I berated myself as a dancer, the weaker I made myself physically and mentally. Through homeopathy I now understand that all my struggling thoughts would have had a negative impact on my body. Clinical experience has taught me that the majority of illnesses are due to what’s going on in the mind.” PJ.

A Practical Example of how Homeopathy can help

A homeopath will never just focus on an injury, they look at the whole person since the basis of homeopathic practice is that the mind and body are linked.

To a homeopath it's just as important understand everything that happened up to and including the injury, so a conversation with your homeopath might sound like this:

Client: "I'm really nervous before a presentation."

Pearl: "and ....
(what she wants to know is "what happened next"how it makes you feel, react and so on.)

So this means that the homeopath will be looking after the whole of you, your injury, nervousness, feelings, behaviour and more - not just the one area in isolation.

Here are some examples of three dancers with apparently the same problem:

~ Dancer A suffers with pre-performance nerves, her legs are so shaky that she can just about stand upright.

~ Dancer B suffers with pre-performance nerves which leads to a dodgy tummy

~ Dancer C suffers with pre-performance nerves but once he gets going all is well.

Here we have three people who apparently have the same problem but each will benefit from a different homeopathic remedy.

Let's take another example:

~ Dancer A tears a ligament in her ankle. She says everything is fine and carries on as though nothing has happened.

~ Dancer B tears a ligament in his ankle. He doesn't want to be moved or even touched.

~ Dancer C tears a ligament in her ankle and becomes depressed.

Again each dancer appears to have the same problem. What interests the homeopath is not only the injury but their reaction, the mind responding to a bodily injury) If these subtleties can be recognised and acted on quickly, recovery can be much swifter.

Research shows that dancers as a rule have limited finances and are generally not prepared when it comes to having to pay for treatment. A dancer will work on an injury for as long as possible before seeking treatment. So how can homeopathy help with this?

In the most important way. In the short term, homeopathic acute remedies will limit injury but ultimately it’s the remedy prescribed by the homeopath that will result in a more speedy and in-depth recovery.

So, self prescribed remedies can offer immediate help but as a dancer homeopath myself, I think it's very important to remind dancers that recovering from their injury properly and preventing the next injury is not about applying a band aid. This means that homeopathy is a really cost effective treatment AND it keeps the dancer dancing - healthily!

Yes, by all means take an acute remedy such as Arnica immediately after an injury but the ultimate ‘cure’ will come from the remedy that has covered the ‘what happened before/ next’ category.

No short cuts.

So it's over to you.

" I had a ski accident, the final diagnosis was that I had completely ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament; I was to wait a whole year to have reconstructive surgery. Throughout this period I worked closely with my homeopath and physiotherapist. I never took painkillers because I had been on homeopathic remedies from the moment I injured my knee. There were times when I was very low. Homeopathy was also of great help here, with my emotional side more balanced, I was able to focus on getting better. I was told that I was in the group of 1% of people who recover so well after such an operation. I strongly believe that this was down to the combination of treatments that complimented each other. I have been signed off 6 months early from the hospital and their physiotherapy department." M.S
